Myths About Neurofeedback, Debunked

As a lesser-known psychological treatment, there are a couple of erroneous assumptions

believed about neurofeedback the public. Here is a list of some myths about neurofeedback

therapy, debunked.

Myth #1: Neurofeedback is not supported by research

False: Neurofeedback and biofeedback research began in the late 1950s Since then, thousands

of articles assessing its efficacy have been published in peer-reviewed journals worldwide.

Research is continuing to be conducted by neuroscientists to expand neurofeedback

approaches and applications. Visit our Conditions Page to learn more.

Myth #2: Neurofeedback is invasive

False: The computer software is only able to track and read your brain activity. It cannot

interfere with your brain activity, nor can it read your thoughts. Neurofeedback works by

rewarding the brain for improved regulation of brain wave rhythms. It is a non-invasive biological conditioning and learning technique.

Myth #3: The person doing neurofeedback “consciously learns” how to control their own

brain waves

False: After neurofeedback training, you will not be able to control your brain waves consciously.

Rather, the brain learns how to control its own activity through conditioning and reinforcement.

Myth #4: You will see improvements faster if you try harder

False: The fastest way to see improvement is to attend sessions consistently and adopt a

healthier lifestyle change (prioritizing sleep, exercise, stress management and coping

techniques, etc.). There are no other shortcuts.

Myth #5: The effects of neurofeedback therapy wear off over time

False: In most cases and after 8-12 weeks of consistent training, your brain makes connections

that may last for years, as long as you adopt a healthy lifestyle change (see the previous

section).

Myth #6: Neurofeedback can only be done at a clinic

False: With remote neurofeedback therapy, clients can train with clinical-grade neurofeedback

therapy equipment from the comfort of their own homes. Compared to in-house therapy, remote

neurofeedback therapy provides a number of time-saving, health and performance benefits.
